Not all the babies were born at home, and the stories give an idea of the variety of labours women can have. There's no babies being born on the kitchen floor 5 minutes after the first contraction - though obviously that makes good soap opera programming.
In real life "labour" is a pretty good description. Hard work - but the rewards can be pretty good too!
